This image depicts an ancient myth that is found in several cultures throughout the world. The myth describes the creation of the universe and tells of an eternal struggle between angels and demons. In the myth the demons and the angels are engaged in an epic contest of tug-of-war. Each side gripping the opposite end of the great cosmic snake. As the two sides struggle, pulling back and forth on the snake, primordial cosmic matter is churned up creating all that is in the universe, planets, stars, nebulae etc. These two warring sides basically act like a great cosmic butter churn, creating our physical universe from unorganized matter.

The doctrine of God creating the universe from unorganized matter was held by the earliest Christians. Unfortunately this truth was later discarded in favor of the theory of creation "ex nihilo"or creation out of nothing. This idea was incorporated into christian thinking by later church leaders because it squared better with the incorrect views of the neo-platonists, who maintained that physical matter was evil and anathema to the Divine.

I did the demon first, cause I like bat wings, they are fun to draw, plus I wanted to paint in red today. I think will do the angels next.

Things have slowed down quite a bit lately, probably the economy. I'll be posting more frequently now, until I get busy again.

This is one in a series of portraits I'm doing for an upcoming art show.

fish man head. . . uh yeah

goofing around with a game idea about pre-human creatures in a prehistoric setting with mammoths, saber tooth cats, giant rhinos, cave bears. . . I don't think there has been a video game created in a world like this. Could make for cool game tho. . . I think.

This was done in Z Brush. . . what an amazing tool!

This is my first attempt with this program. I think the results show how powerful this application is, that a rank amateur such as myself, can get these kind of results right off the bat!

I did do a bit of post edits of the lighting in Photoshop.

I entered the "skin a scion" contest on deviant art. . . I didn't win

more "small mark" artwork

Friday, July 27, 2007

This little guy is the main character for my book "Small Mark."

Its a story of how God can turn our weakness, fears and frailties into courage and strength.

I've had some interest in the manuscript, but no one has asked to publish it yet.

I found this really cool application for windows called object dock. It basically mimics what I've seen on the mac os, with large animated icons for applications running along the bottom of the screen. The cool thing is that you can easily change the icons for each application. Its supports the .png file format with alpha/transparency.

I made this from scratch in photoshop, no 3-d, really. I thought it turned out pretty well, kinda surprised myself.

couldn't resist another version. . . no more I swear!

here is the final image. I'm just too lazy to finish the weapon. If this were for a client I would, but it aint so. . .

Lately people have been asking about how long a picture took to make. For those who wish to know, this one took about seven or eight hours, start to finish.

starting to noodle and mess with color, value and texture. I don't work that efficiently. I really should just stick to a well defined process. I just sort of look at the image and try different things and if it works I leave it

a more refined gorilla sketch, I call this technique "beating a drawing into submission"

there are still a lot of problems with this drawing, but hey, its done on the computer so at least I won't erase a hole thru the paper. thanks goodness for wacom tablets!

I'll probably take this and make a cleaner line drawing and then color it in or maybe not.

a few notes, trying not to make the helmet look to much like Tim Burton's designs but its kind of hard to do since gorillas have such tall noggins, kinda weird actually. the weapon is a direct rip-off of an m-79 grenade launcher, but I'll alter it. . . what? you've got to use scrap.

another gorilla sketch, I like this one better, he looks more like a big male silverback gorilla than the last one which was too slender, and human like. I think I'll finish this one . . .

maybe I'll post the different stages I go thru as I make this illustration, uh, maybe

planet of the apes, maybe I'll color it in
